Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe Becomes African Union Chairman
One of Africa’s most divisive figures, Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has taken over the chairmanship of the African Union, casting a shadow over the continental body’s relations with the West.

The only leader Zimbabwe has known since independence from Britain in 1980 assumed the largely ceremonial role when he was handed the AU flag and gavel at a summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

Iran Welcomes US Humanitarian Rescue From Somali Pirates - APThe Iranian government has welcomed a US Navy rescue of 13 of its nationals from pirates near the entrance to the Gulf, in a rare respite from months of rising tensions between Tehran and Washington. U.S. officials announced Friday that the fishermen had been rescued by a U.S. Navy destroyer on Thursday, more than 40 days after their boat was commandeered by suspected Somali pirates in the northern Arabian Sea. The rescue came just days after Tehran warned the U.S. to keep the same group of warships out of the Persian Gulf in a reflection of Iran’s fear that American warships could try to enforce an embargo against Iranian oil exports. One Iranian media outlet, the Fars news agency, which is close to the hardline Revolutionary Guards, dismissed the incident as a suspect “Hollywood movie” meant “to justify the presence of a US aircraft carrier in Persian Gulf waters.” The rescue was carried out by one of several warships escorting the carrier USS John C Stennis, which Iranian military chiefs early this week warned to stay out of Gulf waters or else face the “full force” of Iran’s navy. Naval forces from several countries patrol shipping lanes in the region in pursuit of Somali pirates. The pirates, who are after huge ransoms, have dramatically expanded their range in recent years and targeted some of the largest vessels to take to the seas, including oil supertankers. Indeep Media - Russia Joins World Trade Organisation

After 18 years of negotiations Russia has been approved for membership in the World Trade Organisation – WTO. Russia is the largest economy in the world that was not a part of the WTO. Members of the organisation have finally agreed to its accession. Talks on joining the World Trade Organisation have dragged on for 18 years. Russia’s bid for entry had been held up by WTO member Georgia since the two countries fought a war in 2008. Russia hopes to boost exports of minerals, but a large number of domestic industries, such as car makers, will face new competition. Russia also expects food imports will soar and prices will fall as tariffs are reduced. A member of the Russian delegation to the WTO, Anatoly Chubais, says his country is increasingly opening itself up to the world.
