Australia Very Quietly Shifts Israeli Settlement Policy

Australia Quietly Shift Settlement PolicyAustralia’s Federal Government has very quietly backflipped it’s position on the construction of Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. Acting on instruction from Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Australian government officials at the United Nations have withdrawn their nations support for an order that would have seen a halt to the expansion of any Israeli settlements in all of the occupied territories.

Under the previous – Labor Government – Australia condemned the settlements, but since the Coalition won office Australia has abstained from United Nations votes on the issue, returning Australia to the Howard-era policy of not supporting votes critical of Israel settlements. The current tight-lipped approach to implementation has seen NO information released on the governments change in Middle East policy.

In a statement released today, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the policy shift, saying it reflects the Government’s concern that Middle East resolutions should be balanced. The statement says the Government considers each resolution on a case-by-case basis and will not support those which are one-sided or pre-judge the outcome of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian territories.

However, diplomats warn the fragile relationship is on rocky ground after Australia signalled it would abstain from voting at the United Nations on motions that condemn the expansion of Israeli settlements :: Read the full article »»»»

3rd Biggest Carbon Emitter? Wasted Food!

Food WasteThe food the world wastes accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than any country except for China and the United States, according to a United Nations report.

It says every year about a third of all food for human consumption, around 1.3 billion tonnes, is wasted, along with all the energy, water and chemicals needed to produce it and dispose of it.

Almost 30 per cent of the world’s farmland, and a volume of water equivalent to the annual discharge of Europe’s River Volga, are in effect being used in vain.

In its Food Wastage Footprint Report – below – the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation – FAO – estimated the carbon footprint of wasted food was equivalent to 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

If it were a country, it would be the world’s third biggest emitter after China and the US, suggesting that more efficient food use could contribute substantially to global efforts to cut greenhouse gases to limit global warming :: Read the full article »»»»

Google Recognises Palestine

Google-PalestineInternet search behemoth Google has recognised Palestine’s upgraded United Nations status, placing the name “Palestine” on its search engine instead of “Palestinian Territories,” the US company said, raising the ire of Israel. The domain name www.google.ps, Google’s search engine for the territories, now brings up a homepage with “Palestine” written underneath the Google logo.

In November last year the UN general assembly upgraded Palestine to the status of non-member observer state by a vote of 138 votes in favour, 9 against and 41 abstentions.

Palestinian authorities have since begun to use the “State of Palestine” in diplomatic correspondence and issued official stamps for the purpose. The google recognition took effect this week, Google spokesman Nathan Tyler said in a statement :: Read the full article »»»»

UN Scraps Gaza Marathon, Hamas Refuses to Allow Female Runners

ISLAMThe United Nations Relief and Works Agency – UNRWA – the United Nations most prevalent agency in Palestine has cancelled its annual marathon, after the territory’s Hamas party banned women from the race.

Hamas says allowing females to participate in the fund-raising event, scheduled for April, goes against Islamic tradition. This year’s marathon had a  record number of female runners registered to take part.

The United Nations Agency had planned the marathon to raise money for the children of Gaza. Hamas apparently liked the idea of the money, but it didn’t like the idea of women stepping out from behind the kitchen-sink.

On the eve of International Women’s Day, this stance taken by Hamas can only be viewed as backward thinking, regrettable :: Read the full article »»»»

CRIME PAYS! The United Nations says crime generates an estimated $US2.1 trillion in global proceeds each year – 3.6 per cent of the world’s gross domestic product.

In what are the first UN figures for global crime profits, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime via it’s Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice has announced criminal business is one of the world’s top 20 economies. Transnational organized crime manifests in many forms, including as trafficking in drugs, firearms and even persons.

According to the UN, organized crime groups exploit human mobility to smuggle migrants and undermine financial systems through money laundering. The vast sums of money involved can compromise legitimate economies and directly impact public processes by ‘buying’ elections through corruption, the UN says :: Read the full article »»»»
