Australian organic retail NewsAustralian supermarket behemoth Coles has paid multiple fines totalling $AU61,200 for allegedly misleading consumers about the origin of some of its fresh produce. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission – ACCC – says Helping Australia Grow signs were hung above imported navel oranges, kiwi fruit, asparagus and almonds.

The ACCC said that the well known – and universally accepted accreditation of locally produced fare – the triangular Australian Grown symbol was also misused. The watchdog said the display gave the impression the imported fruit had been locally grown.

Coles advised the ACCC that the misconduct arose out of the relocation of stock within stores without updating the promotional imagery on the price boards. The ACCC nevertheless considered action was necessary given the importance consumers place on representations of this kind, and the importance of strong compliance processes when choosing to make such claims in the context of a widespread campaign :: Read the full article »»»»

Child Sex OffendersA South Australian computer technician who downloaded child pornography and frequented internet chatrooms in order to fulfil his impaired sexual fantasies about toddlers has been jailed for 3 years. 38 year old Steven John Bolbot, pleaded guilty to an aggravated count of possessing child pornography as well as two counts of producing child pornography.

Several researchers have reported correlations between paedophilia and certain psychological characteristics, such as low self-esteem and poor social skills. While we’ve spent quite a large amount of time outing paedophile behaviour – Paedophilia – there is a gathering body of evidence that describes this abominable behaviour as an illness.

We accept that this an extremely complicated issue – as outlined in articles such as: Cohen et al  ‘Personality Impairment in Male Paedophiles‘ which outlines a view of paedophiles as having an illness, described as impaired interpersonal functioning, elevated passive-aggressiveness, as well as  an impaired self-concept.

According to the authors, pathologic personality traits in paedophiles lend support to a hypothesis that such pathology is related to both motivation for and failure to inhibit paedophilia behaviour. However, in Australia the sentencing of this most damaging anti-social behaviour is at best weak, in comparison: a US court has just sentenced a paedophile to 40 years jail :: Read the full article »»»»

Facebook! A Sorry Site, After 6 Million Users Private Data Shared

FACEBOOKFacebook says it’s “upset and embarrassed” that it allowed a software bug to share the phone numbers and email addresses of  6 million users. However the social network says no financial or other information was revealed to others, and there is “no evidence that this bug has been exploited maliciously”. Facebook says affected users are being notified by email.

The social media behemoth has stressed that the practical impact is likely to be “minimal,”  because improper data sharing would only have occurred between users who already had some connection.

In a statement Facebook said the bug “may have allowed some of a person’s contact information to be accessed by people who either had some contact information about that person or some connection to them”. It said the unwarranted sharing would have occurred when a Facebook user went to download an archive of their Facebook account through the social network’s Download Your Information  tool :: Read the full article »»»»

CHINAThe second largest economy on the planet – and arguably the most powerful – China, has launched a venomous attack on the United States, labelling it an “espionage villain” after former US spy Edward Snowden raised new allegations on the far-reaching US cyber-surveillance program, PRISM.

Snowden’s latest allegations have the US spy-program directed squarely at  Chinese targets.

The US is seeking to extradite the 30-year-old technician from Hong Kong, where he is holed up after leaking details of secret US intelligence programs to international media outlets.

Snowden’s leaks revealed that the National Security Agency – NSA – has access to vast amounts of internet data such as emails, chat rooms and video under a government program known as PRISM. The South China Morning Post says documents and statements by Snowden show PRISM also hacked major Chinese telecom companies to access text messages and targeted China’s top Tsinghua University.

US privacy proponentss have blasted Prism as unconstitutional government surveillance, they’ve called for a review of the program. The US Centre for Constitutional Rights says it believes PRISM to be the broadest surveillance order issued in American history. The Bashing China has received over the past decade on civil liberty, internet censorship and human rights now looks like COMPLETE hypocrisy. The scale of PRISM is daunting, it’s flow-on affect for US allies is likely to haunt us for the foreseeable future, ironically.

In an absolutely ironic twist, Snowden’s revelations come just weeks after US president Barack Obama and Chinese leader Xi Jinping held meeting on the subject of China/US relations where the US president took the Chinese leader to task on hacking charges :: Read the full article »»»»

CHINAChinese authorities have broken a major crime racket that passed off more than $AU1 million in rat as mutton. Police have arrested 900 suspects since January for selling and producing fake or tainted meat products, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement.

During the crackdown, police discovered one suspect, surnamed Wei, had used additives to spice up and sell rat, fox and mink meat at markets in Shanghai and Jiangsu province. Despite persistent efforts by police, “food safety crimes are still prominent, and new situations are emerging with new characteristics”.

Food safety and environmental pollution are chronic problems in China and public anxiety over cases of fake or toxic food often spreads quickly. In April, many consumers lost their appetite for poultry as an outbreak of the H7N9 bird flu virus spread in China :: Read the full article »»»»
